Split Lock Washers
Washers are vital components that provide a smooth bearing surface between a bolt and another surface. They are often used to distribute the load of their accompanying fastener. Split Lock washers are a special type of washer that prevents fasteners from becoming loose.
The Variety of Split and Tooth Lockwashers
There are two main reasons fasteners become loose: rotations during use and settling of material after fastening. Lockwashers prevent this from happening in multiple ways:
- Split washers have a split with two opposed edges, with each edge free to create friction between the fastener and the surface material.
- High collar lockwashers have smaller diameters than other split washers but are taller. These flatten as tension is added.
- External tooth lock washers, sometimes called star washers, dig slightly into the surface material to prevent loosening. The teeth of the external tooth washer are located on the outer diameter.
- Internal tooth lock washers have teeth on the inside of the washer. In addition to biting into the surface material, these lockwashers also dig into the surface of the fastener. This type of washer is often used in grounding applications.
