ASTM-F959 Load Indicator & DTI Washers
For situations that require precision fastening, ASTM-F959 load indicator washers cover the requirements for compressible washer for tension indicators. These specialized washers deform predictably under pressure, allowing installers to measure the depth of deformation and confirm that the joint received minimum sealing torque. These washers are available for a range of nominal bolt diameters – 1/2” thru 1-1/2” inclusive.
ASTM F959-DTI (direct tension indicators) washers are typically installed either under the head of a hex bolt (A325) or a harden washer (F436), to indicate the correct tension when an A325 structural bolt is installed.

This includes washers that fit the entire line of ASTM A325 (ASTM F3125) bolts, from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch in nominal diameters, as well as the ASTM A325M metric equivalent in sizes from 13-28 millimeters.
There are additional specifications for the bolts that fit these load indicator washers. Type 1 bolts are boron steel, medium carbon steel, or medium carbon steel alloy, while Type 3 are weathering steel. There are also three connection types:
- Slip-critical (SC)
- Bearing type with threads on the shear plane (N)
- Bearing type with threads not on the shear plane (X)
The design of ASTM A325 bolts and their corresponding nuts allows them to tighten very close to the maximum proof strength (or, in other words, the load at which they would start to deform). This allows for extremely strong bolt tension.
However, to take advantage of this strength, operators must apply sufficient torque to achieve the standard 70% load. To reiterate, load indicator washers are able to confirm that load and therefore ensure the application of appropriate bolt tension.
