Jack Bolts

Brazos Fasteners is a leading provider of square head set screws, also know as jack bolts. The square head set screws are a fully threads fastener that has a large wrench end and comes in a variety of point options. The most commonly used point type is cup point. Manufactured out of alloy steel for maximum strength, also reduces the possibility of galling and bolt fatigue. The large wrench end area provides a surface that provides positive gripping with a hand wrench.

The most commonly used square head set screw point type is cup-shaped, the edges of the cup point dig into the contact surface for higher holding power.

Dimensional specifications are governed by ASME B18.6.2 & ASME B18.2.1

What Are the Options for Jack Bolts?

Square head set screws are strength hardened with a tensile strength of 170,000 to 180,000 psi, making them one of the strongest bolts to be used in the heaviest applications.

Stainless steel is an iron-based alloy with a chromium component that makes it resistant to corrosion. There are three types of stainless steel often used for square head set screws:

  • Austenitic: This has an 18-8 blend of chromium and nickel. The 304L has stronger resistance to chemical corrosion.
  • Martensitic: The blend for this strength comes from 12%-18% chromium and hardened heat treatment, but it has weak corrosion resistance.
  • Ferritic: With a blend of 12%-18% chromium and less carbon, this steel is magnetic and difficult to harden under heat treatments. This alloy shouldn’t be used for environments subject to high corrosion.

As an ASME B18.2.1 square head set screws & bolts supplier, Brazos Fasteners offers a wide range of diameters and lengths.

What Is the Importance of Square Head Set Screws?

The square head set screws are typically used to as a tool to make minor adjustments necessary on large skids, pulleys, and other machinery used by petrochemical and fabrication companies, businesses in the oil and gas industry, transportation, manufacturing, or construction will also find a range of sizes, materials, and options for fasteners.

Set screws differ from general-purpose screws because of how they pin two components against each other. Compression forces hold the objects together without the use of a nut.
