Flange isolation kits typically have two functions in a flanged pipeline system. First, they separate flanges by preventing any part of one side of the flange metal to touch the other side. This prevents the formation of large galvanic cells and, thereby, reduces corrosion.
Second, the gasket material may provide cathodic protection for the flange. This type of protection essentially sacrifices the gasket to protect the flange. Oil and gas companies may simply replace corroded gaskets, which is significantly more efficient than replacing flanges.

- Type O: Designed extra sealing element on both sides of the device, generally, PTFE, Nitrile or Viton Rubber, and are available in both ring and full face design (type E and F). Type O Gaskets are manufactured with phenolic and G-10 materials. The materials for insulation sleeves are, by default, polyethylene or phenolic.
