The main difference between a slotted and a castle hex nut is found in the end turret section where the split pin is located. On castellated hex nuts the end section is slightly turned down to enable the cotter pin to be wound around the turret tightly so the legs do not protrude. On a slotted nut the turret is not turned down so this is not possible.

- Castellated (Castle) hexagon nuts have a hexagon shape along the bottom and a round top where the slots are cut.
