Metric DIN 931, 933, 960, & 961 Hex Head Cap Screws

No industrial business can go without high-quality screws. From production to maintenance, countless tasks require these workhorse fasteners. Choosing the right material, finish, thread profile, and head size is critical for good results with metric hex head cap screws. As a longtime supplier for petrochemical, automotive, marine, mining, and other industries, we provide a range of heavy-duty materials and finishes.

What Are Metric Hex Head Cap Screws?

Metric Hex cap screws follow a strict standard for each specific product. These screws generally have a washer face to protect and support the bearing surface. We typically carry metric DIN 931 (partial thread bolt), metric DIN 933 (full thread bolt), metric DIN 960 (partial fine thread bolt), and metric DIN 961 (fully threaded fine thread bolt) hex head cap screws.

Metric sizes we commonly stock at Brazos Fasteners range from M4 to M36 in industrial settings, though there are larger and smaller options available. Available materials include quenched and tempered carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel A2 (304) & A4 (316), and galvanized and zinc finishes.

How Do Metric Hex Cap Screws Compare to SAE Tensile Strength Ratings?

Metric fasteners usually adhere to ISO 898-1 specification applicable for bolts, screws, & stud bolts with coarse thread pitch M1,6 to M39, and fine thread pitch M8 X 1 to M39 x 3with diameter/pitch combinations in accordance with ISO 261 and ISO 262, and having thread tolerances in accordance with ISO 965-1, 965-2, & 965-4. Hex cap screws use two numbers, such as Class 8.8, Class 10.9, and Class 12.9. The first number represents tensile strength in megapascals (1/100), and the second number is the comparative yield strength (1/10). This means that metric hex screws rated 10.9 offer 1040 MPa of tensile strength and 90% yield strength, or 940 MPa.

Put simply, metric 8.8 hex cap screws are roughly the same as SAE J429 Grade 5. Metric 10.9 sizes deliver similar tensile strength as Grade 8. Choosing Class 12.9 metric hex cap screws provides 1220 MPa or about 175,000 psi of tensile strength.

The conversion equivalent from Mpa (metric unit of measure) to PSI (imperial unit of measure) is 1 Mpa = 145 psi. these are both a basic unit of measurement for pressure and tension in the International System of Weights and Measures.
