Stainless, Carbon, & Alloy Steel Socket Head Cap Screws
When you are buying socket head cap screws, Brazos Fasteners has the options you need for every application. Socket cap screws use a hexagonal drive recess and a hex key to install or remove it. This makes them ideal for small spaces where a screwdriver doesn’t fit.
Depending on your application or industry, you can order socket head cap screws in different materials. These include:
- Stainless steel socket head cap screws
- Carbon steel socket head cap screws
- Alloy steel socket head cap screws
These materials provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel socket head caps options include Grade 304 and 316, with industries widely using Grade 304 because of its superior corrosion resistance in a variety of environments.
What Are the Options for Socket Head Cap Screws?
When appearance and strength are important to an application, socket head cap screws are ideal. They can be found in plastic injection molds, tooling, power transmission, and metal stamping dies. They are ideal for the oil and gas industry for resisting high pressures and harsh environments, as well as manufacturing.
Tensile strength varies by material and heat treatment, but a standard inch series is generally 20% stronger than a Grade 8 hex head cap screw and an impressive 50% strong than a Grade 5. There is a minimum of 180,000 psi in tensile strength for ½” diameter screws and smaller, with screws of a 5/8” diameter and above having a tensile strength of 170,000 psi.
ASTM A574 is the specification for quenched and tempered alloy steel socket head cap screws, 0.060 thru 4” diameter where high strength is required for the application.
ASTM F837 is the specification for stainless steel socket head cap screws requiring general corrosion resistance, diameter range is 0.060 thru 1-1/2”.
- Three groups of stainless steel alloys are covered under this specification: Austenitic Group 1 & 2 and Martensitic Group 5.
- Four property conditions are covered: austenitic Alloy Groups 1 and 2 in an annealed condition (AF) at 85 ksi maximum, in two cold worked conditions (CW) at 80 ksi minimum, (CW1) at 102 ksi minimum, and martensitic Alloy Group 5 in a heat treated condition (HT) at 160 ksi minimum.
