ASTM-A193 B7, B7M, B8, & B8M Stud Bolts

Stud bolts are lengths of fully threaded rod with a hexagon nut on each end. They are a common fastener for flanges and other heavy-duty connections. Construction projects requiring a secure connection often favor ASTM-A193 B7 stud bolts over other types of fasteners.

A stud bolt is typically stronger than a traditional bolt because it is forged from a single piece of steel. It is well-suited to high-temperature and pressure applications in the petrochemical industry, including flange joints, offshore platforms and rigs, and high-temperature piping.

Types of Stud Bolts

As a stud bolt supplier, our team at Brazos Fasteners carries a full line of threaded stud bolts commonly used in the fabrication, oil, and gas industries. Our inventory includes both ASTM-A193 B7, B7M, B8, B8M stud bolt.

ASTM-A193 B7 Stud

ASTM-A193 grade B7 studs are made of chromium-molybdenum steel. The studs are quenched and tempered to achieve the desired tensile strength (mechanical properties). Other grades will include ASTM-A193 B7M stud bolts & B16.

B7 studs can be used in many applications, but are commonly used in pressure vessels that do not require corrosion resistance and are not susceptible to stress cracking, and for temperatures typically less than 750 degrees. These studs can be coated with different finishes – see below.

  • Plain
  • Teflon coated
  • Hot-dipped galvanized
  • Cadmium & Zinc

Size and Strength: ASTM-A193 B7 studs with diameters 2-1/2” and smaller will yield a 125,00 PSI tensile strength

  • Diameters of 2-5/8” to 4” have a 115,000 PSI tensile strength
  • Diameters 4” to 7” have a 100,000 PSI tensile strength

A193 B7 studs will typically use an ASTM A194 heavy hex nut (2H)

ASTM-A193 B8 & B8M Studs

ASTM-A193 B8 Stud Bolts: ASTM-A193 B8 studs are commonly used in high temperature applications, but you have to be cautious to distinguish between B8 Class 1 and Class 2 studs. B8 studs are made of AISI 304 stainless steel, that has been austenitic stainless steel and require carbide solution treatment.

Class 1 studs are not strained hardened, and the yield strength is 30,000 PSI, whereas, Class 2 studs are strained hardened to a tensile strength of 125,000 PSI.

ASTM A194 grade 8 stainless steel nuts are required for this material.

ASTM-A193 B8M Stud Bolts: We stock a B8M which is manufactured the same as B8, but are manufactured from AISI 316 stainless steel. The 316 stainless steel offers better corrosion resistance because of the increased amount of nickel.

ASTM A193 grade B8M stud bolts Class 1 requires a carbide solution treatment, the Class 2 material will require additional strain hardening just like the B8 material.

ASTM A194 grade 8M stainless steel nuts are required for this material.

ASTM A320 grade L7 & L7M

Other common material grades that we use for stud applications are ASTM A320 grade L7 & L7M.

This material grade is used in low temperature applications (-50F to -150F), these require a grade 4 or 7 nut.

Industries That Use Stud Bolts

A193 B7 stud bolts are a key component of many industrial applications. In addition to oil and gas companies, their use extends to industries such as:
